CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa today released its official enrollment figures for fall 2014. Enrollment numbers are determined on students enrolled through the end of the 10 th day of classes. UNI's total fall enrollment is 11,928. Officials report that new students direct from high school are up more than 4 percent from last year. This is the second consecutive year that group has seen an increase.
In addition, the university reported improvement in its student retention rate. The rate of students returning for a second year is 84.7 percent, compared to 82.9 percent from last year. This compares to a national average of 71.7 percent for similar institutions. This year's retention rate is the highest it's been in 15 years.
"A top priority at UNI is recruiting and retaining students," said UNI President Bill Ruud. "We've had some success, and we're on the path to see more success as we implement and improve our enrollment management structure and process.
"To recruit students we have more robust in-state and out-of-state recruitment and retention efforts, especially in states bordering Iowa. We are also actively engaging the help of alumni who reside inside and outside of Iowa; involving current UNI students to help recruit students from their hometown high schools; and expanding and strengthening our partnerships with Iowa community colleges. We also hired an associate vice president for enrollment management. All of this is done in an effort to continue to provide students an accessible, affordable and excellent education."
