There are increasing reports of consumers being cold called by fraudsters claiming to be from a major computer company and or financial institutions. A number of individuals have been duped and have disclosed their information and have suffered financial loss.

To advise that a number of businesses in Ireland have recently fallen victim to a scam involving bogus emails being received that purport to be from an existing creditor. The email generally contains a letter as an attachment, the letter purports to notify the receiver of new (amended) bank account details to which all future payments are to be sent.

We are aware of an increased threat to online banking through Trojan / Malware attacks. These are sophisticated attacks, specifically targeting online banking where an attempt is made to gather personal or security information entered on a user’s PC or laptop, which has been infected through the Trojan.

We have been advised that a number of banking customers in Ireland have fallen prey to frauds that involve various forms of social engineering. Social Engineering in this context means techniques of manipulating people to obtain information (e.g. via email or phone calls), or retrieving information from social networks, for the purposes of fraud.

We have recently been notified about an increase in security threats to customers. Please read the following tips on how to protect your computer:

  • Ensure you have up-to-date, anti-malware and anti-virus software in place. This will help to protect your PC from Malware attacks such as Viruses. Worms. Trojans. Spyware etc. Keep it updated and use it to perform regular checks on your computer system. Check whether or not your Internet Service Provider (ISP) offers anti-malware and anti-virus software.
  • Ensure that your operating system and all other software is up to date with relevant security patches and bug-fixes available frequently from the vendor sites. Subscribe to your vendor's security mailing lists and apply updates as appropriate to your operating system.
  • Make use of current Web browser security application add-ons such as anti-phishing, pop-up blocking, and script blocking software.
  • Add the Business On Line homepage to your 'trusted sites'
  • Turn on your PC's firewall or install and enable one if none exists. Check your PC settings and 'help' section.
  • Backup your important data. Ensure you continuously backup any important information held on your PC. This includes documents, pictures and emails. Store these backups carefully in a safe place.

At Business On Line, we understand how important the security and confidentiality of your information is. Keeping customers’ information secure is a top priority for us, but it is also important for you to protect your security online.

Remember! It is your responsibility to ensure that you take appropriate measures to protect your online security. You should ensure that:

  1. Your PC has a recognised Anti-Virus software package installed. Examples include AVG, Avast, Norton, McAfee or Trend Micro
  2. You have configured your Anti-Virus software to regularly download the latest virus definitions (often referred to as ‘AV update’) and that a FULL scan of your system is frequently performed.
  3. You have installed, maintain and regularly run a recognised Malicious Software detection program (e.g. Malwarebytes) in conjunction with your Antivirus.
  4. ‘Windows Update’ is active and all available updates have been applied.
  5. You have updated any other applications installed (e.g. Java, Adobe Reader).
  • DO contact the Business On Line Helpdesk immediately.
  • DO NOT disclose any details on your PC
  • DO NOT click on any links
  • DO NOT log in to Business On Line until any viruses have been removed
  • Should you receive a request seeking information relating to your bank details or passwords, please do not disclose these details.
  • Bank of Ireland will never send emails which require customers to send personal information via email or pop-up windows.
  • Bank of Ireland Business On Line will never ask you for any information other than your User ID and Password on the Business On Line log on screen.
  • You should never enter your Digital Certificate payments password on the Business On Line log on screen.
  • Any unsolicited requests for Bank of Ireland account information you receive through pop-up windows, emails, or Web sites should be considered fraudulent and reported immediately.
  1. When logging on to Business On Line we will ask you to provide your individual “User I.D.” and “Password” only. This information is encrypted during transmission and will remain a secret as long as you do not disclose it. We use what is known as 128 bit SSL encryption to ensure the highest level of security of information passing between our customers and ourselves.
  2. Bank of Ireland recommends that you never share User IDs and Log-on passwords. Each user in your company should have their own user name and log on details.
  3. Payments are authorised on Business On Line by using a Digital Certificate and password.
  4. Business On Line requires the use of a secure browser to access account information and perform transactions.
  5. The bank is protected by a firewall, which forms a barrier between the outside Internet and the internal bank network.
  6. Business On Line will never ask you for any information other than your user ID and Password on the Business On Line log in screens.
  7. After a 5 minute period of inactivity, your current session on Business On Line will automatically timeout. To restart your session, all you have to do is re-enter your User ID, and password at the login screen.
  8. After periods of inactivity of your Business On Line profile, the bank may require Users to reset their passwords. If you require an Administrator password to be reset, please contact the Business On Line Helpdesk

If you receive a fraudulent email, pop-up or web page report it immediately to our Business On Line Help Desk. Do not reply or follow any of the specified instructions, regardless of how genuine they may appear.
