What a beautiful day we had Saturday, October 12, 2013, at Greenfield Village. My husband, 10 year old son and I spent the day wandering thru history. They had carved pumpkins everywhere, we purchased tickets to the special after-hours Halloween Event and left feeling very tired and very satisfied.
My husband and I both agreed that it was less crowded during the day (our first visit was this August to Ford Museum on one day and Greenfield Village the next - we purchased a family membership we were so impressed!) and we learned so much more. Every single staff person we encountered, from the Model T driver to the Vintage Bus driver, to the young college student selling tickets at one of the rides, to the character's dressed for the Halloween After Dark event, were kind, courteous and helpful. (Our son now wants to work here when he's older!)
We most enjoyed the conversations with our son upon his discovery of how pottery was made, printing presses of the era worked, the farm house with the ham's downstairs looking very unappetizing, how material was originally made from shearing sheep to cleaning wool to spinning and then on to the looms.
The after hours evening event was wonderful. One staff person suggested that we arrive about 10 minutes after our scheduled ticket time (8:00 p.m.) and she was spot-on. We didn't have to wait in line, there was a bit of a lull in the group, and we really only got into the heavy crowds about 3/4's the way thru. It is geared for the 4-8 year old's, I would estimate. Our 10 year old enjoyed it but we all agreed it wouldn't be a "must" in the future. Some things are better done only once, right? But we can't wait to see the Christmas lights of the past! And. make sure you wear you comfy shoes!
