Lois L. McAtee, age 71, passed away at her home in Valparaiso, on Wednesday January 2, 2002. She was born in Munhall, PA on December 7, 1930 the daughter of Peter and Hilda (Carl) Stunkey. Lois was married to Louis J. McAtee in Homestead, PA on April 5, 1952. She was a homemaker and a member of the Portage First United Methodist Church.

Mrs. McAtee is survived by her loving family, four sons: Wayne McAtee of South Haven, IN, Charlie (Debbi) McAtee of Wheeling, IL, Ron McAtee of Highland, IL and Mark (Cheryl) McAtee of Hammond, IN; her mother, Hilda Stunkey of Homestead, PA and one sister. Hilda (Joe) Churma of Pittsburgh, PA. She was preceded in death by her father, Peter Stunkey and her husband, Louis J. McAtee. There will be a graveside service at McCool Cemetery on Saturday, January 5, 2002 at 9:30 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Joseph Baunoch, Sr. from the Portage First United Methodist Church officiating. Elisa Rose Manna, age 71, of Bermuda Dunes, California, formerly of Gary and Portage, Indiana, was called to the Lord on Tuesday, January 1, 2002. Preceded in death by her parents, Maria and Loreto Manna. She was the beloved mother of Anthony (Carol) Cifaldi, Jr. of Portage and Vincenta (Jesse Garcia) Ramirez of Chicago, IL. She will also be sadly missed by her five grandchildren: Marcia (Aaron) Lee, Anthony (Kristina) Ramirez, Amber Cifaldi, Robert (Monida) Rav, Jr. and Michael Rav, as well as her seven great-grandchildren: Biance, Brvan, Brandon, Brook, Alicea, Moriah and Joel. Also left to cherish her memory are brothers: Guv (Jean) Manna of Ogden Dunes; two sisters: Amelia (Michael) Del Turco of Portage and Frances (George) Darling of Bermuda Dunes, California; many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was a graduate of Holy Angels Grade School and Horace Mann High School, class of 1948. She was a career school teacher who taught school in Portage, and Indio, California, where she retired three years ago.

She received her Master’s degree in teaching from California State University. She was named “Teacher of the year” in 1998. Abel O. Medina, age 40, of Hammond passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2002 at St. Margery Mercy Hospital in Hammond. He is survived by his mother, Maria Dolores Medina, brothers and sisters, Oscar, Norman, and Adam Medina all of Hammond, Eva (Michael) Combs of Hammond, and Oralia (Pablo) Lopez of Calumet City, IL. nieces and nephews, Mark, Joseph, Silvia, Alyssa, Jorge, Trevor, Jesse, and Samuel, good friend, Erasmo Estrada and Lisa Clavier, both of Hammond. Preceded in death by father, Serbando Medina in 1998.

Louise Miles, age 84, of Hammond, IN, passed away Thursday, January 3, 2002 at St. Margaret Mercy Hospital, North Campus, Hammond, IN. Charles M. Millan, 89, of Phelps, WI former resident of Schneider, Indiana for 45 years passed away December 31, 2001. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Carl w. Moberg, age 85, of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, a former long time resident of Highland, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday, January 1, 2002. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WW II.

Iain W. Paterson, age 74, of Merrillville, passed away Monday, December 31, 2001. Survived by loving wife, Helen (Orris) of 52 1/2 years, three children; Iain “Skip” (Rise) Paterson, Jr. Littleton, CO, Jammie (Lynn) Paterson of Atlanta, GA, Mary Margaret Conn of Merrillville; two brothers, Stanley (“Sis” Velma) Paterson of Lake Station, Ward (Helen) Paterson of Valparaiso; two sisters, Eleanor Paterson of Hobart, Marguarite Schultz of Griffith, and many loving nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents, James and Margaret Paterson, brother, Jim (Betty) Paterson.

Mr. Paterson was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Church, and Holy Name Society and an honorary member of the Rosary Sodality. Sang in the church choir and called the bingo numbers for the Church Bingos. He was a member of Columbus Msgr. Ryder Council, #4047, 4th Degree Member of Abraham Lincoln Assembly, "The Sounds of Knights", Turkey Creed Garden Club, African Violet Society and played Santa Claus for Reeves Florist. He was a retired electronic technician from the Midwest Steel Company with 30 years of service, a member of the Midwest Steel Retires Club, and a U.S. Navy Veteran.

Paula J. Reed, 52, of New Chicago, Indiana lost her battle with breast cancer January 1, 2002. Paula graduated from River Forest High School and attended Indiana University Northwest. She was a veteran of the U.S.Navy. She was a member of the Paul Leon Wolek Memorial Post 454 and a charter member of the New Chicago Legion Auxiliary Unit 454 holding various offices. Paula was a Medical Technician and was employed by Quest Diagnostics in Calumet City, IL was a trainer and handled safety and quality assurance. Paula was preceded in death by her brother, Phillip. Paula is survived by her son, David Paul Reed of New Chicago; parents,Paul S. and Jeanne R. Reed of New Chicago; three brothers, Timothy J.(Donna) Reed of Highlands Ranch, CO, Robert S.(Suzanne) Reed of Denver CO, and Paul S. (Suzanne F.) Reed Jr. of Lake Station; sister, Suzanne of New Chicago. Paula also had many nieces and nephews. She will be missed by her dear friends, Edie Kilroy and Linda Reed.

The Beloved and loving soul of Merrill Laverne Robbins of Kouts left this earth on January 3, 2002 at 6 a.m. He was born March 15, 1926 to Milford and Bessie Robbins, both deceased. Raised in the Tefft/Wheatfield area, he was married November 18, 1950 to Anna Lou Minton. They were the proud parents of three children, Kathleen (David) James of Valparaiso, Mark (Nancy) Robbins of Kouts and Matthew (Sherri) Robbins of Valparaiso. To these three were born Christian (Debbie) Clifford, Sara (fiance Rob Goodman) Clifford, Erin, Joel and Paige Robbins. David James added to the family Christine, Ben and Rachel and granddaughter, Sydney. Sherri brought to our family Brittany Millar.

Merrill was the fourth of 10 children. Those surviving are Ivan Robbins of Wheatfield, Juanita (Bernie) Marshall of DeMotte, Ireva (Ray deceased) Jones, Carol Bailey, Donna Allen and Terry (Mary) Robbins, all of San Pierre. Preceding him in death were Ralph, Lloyd and Robert Robbins. Merrill leaves many nieces and nephews and brothers-in-law, Marshall (Verna) Minton of Big Sandy, TN, Fred (Lucy) Minton of Kouts and sisters-in-law, Allie (Ray) Weidger of Kouts, Mary Ellen (Ralph) Johns of Phoenix, AZ and Lurie Hayes of Bloomingdale, NJ.

Merrill was a member of the Naval Air Corps during WWII. He was an outstanding athlete and won many trophies in baseball, softball, golf and bowling. He was especially proud of going to the sectional as a freshman and playing the whole basketball game. Merrill loved to garden, fish and maintain his mowers, snowplow and tractors. He enjoyed keeping a couple of acres of picnic ground mowed on his farm near Tefft.

He was employed at Indiana General, producer of magnets, for forty years. He was a dedicated and tireless worker starting on production in 1950. Thereafter he was foundry foreman, superintendent, plant manager and retired as director of rare earth products.

Following cremation at Angelcrest Crematory a memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Kouts Christian Church, Pastor Harold Weller officiating. Visitation will be on Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church. Merrill was very lovingly attended the last four months by VNA of Porter County – Sandy, Cathy, Susie, Mary and Cindy. Helen Romaniak (nee Kulasa), age 90, of Hammond, formerly of East Chicago, passed away Monday, December 31, 2001. Survived by three daughters; Valerie (Thomas) Brady of Michigan City, IN, Sister Joan Marie Romaniak of Hammond, and Patricia (Joseph) Szany of Norwalk, OH, two sons; Joseph Romaniak of Portage and Peter Romaniak of Hammond, nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, three sisters; Cecilia Czachura of Posen, IL, Agnes (Frank) Kolodziej of Calumet City, and Valerie (Leo) Kozarewich of Tinley Park, IL, one sister in law, Christine Botos of Highland, numerous nieces and nephews. Hector Sanabria, Jr. age 13, of Hammond, IN, passed away on Tuesday, January 1, 2002. He is survived by his parents, Hector and Elizabeth Velazquez and two brothers, Juan C. Ortiz and Luis A. Tubens, all of Hammond; four sisters: Glenda Perez of Burnham, IL, Elizabeth Perez of East Chicago, Reyna Ortiz and Luisa A. Born at Edgar County, IL, May 14, 1913, daughter of the late Hiram C. and Maryanne (Madden) Wilson. Former employee of Dr. William R. Border of Valparaiso. Former member of St. Patrick Church, Chesterton, and member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Valparaiso. August 3, 1935 at St. Mark Church in Gary, Indiana, she married Jennings R. Shook, who preceded her in death. Survived by two sons, James (Gail) Shook of Chesterton and John (Donna) Shook of Valparaiso; daughter, Margery (Dale) Ciciora of Valparaiso; 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. George A. Smith, age 96, of Munster, IN, passed away on Monday, January 1, 2002. He is survived by three sons, Patrick (Diane) of ElSegundo, CA, Jon T. George was proprietor of the Smith Brooks-Locker Plant in Hammond for 58 years, a 60 year member of the Munster Lions Club, the Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity of Bethany College and a former member of the Munster Planning Board. Andrew Spisak, age 94, of Hammond, passed away Sunday, December 30, 2001 at the Fountain Valley Regional Hospital, Fountain Valley, CA. He was the beloved husband of the late Anna (Iski) Spisak who passed away August 25, 1980. Evelyn E. Stoehr, age 85, of Portage, formerly of Hobart, passed away on Monday, December 31, 2001. Evelyn was a member of St. Bridget Catholic Church and St. Ann Confraternity. She was a former employee of the Hammond Times. Survivors, three children, John Stoehr of Chesterton, James Stoehr of Las Vegas and Joel Stoehr of Portage, five grandchildren, Michael (Leanne) Stoehr, Jeffrey (Amy) Stoehr, James (Kathleen) Stoehr, Lisa (Jerry) Woodard, and Alex Stoehr, seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melton F. Stoehr, parents, Chris and Vernonica Cole, brother, Robert Cole and sister, Ruth Young.

Funeral services are Saturday, January 5, 2002 beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Rees Funeral Home, 600 W. Oldridge Road, Hobart, preceding to St. Bridget Church for the celebration of Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. with Rev. Dominic V. Bertino officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, Hammond. Visitation will be on Friday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Rees Funeral Home, Hobart, with a St. Anne's Prayer Service at 4 p.m.

LaVonne W. Swedberg, age 81, of Lowell, IN, passed away on Tuesday, December 25, 2001. She is survived by one son, Steven Cansler of Houston, TX, one step-son, Timothy John Swedberg of Alsip, IL; one step-daughter, Susan Ann (Don) Santor of Hickory Hills, IL; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four brothers, Roy (Doris) Brumbaugh, Jr. of Lake Dale/Lowell, Charles (Arlene) Brumbaugh of Cedar Lake, Leonard (Barbara) Brumbaugh of Princeton, IL, John (Lea) Brumbaugh of Crown Point; two sisters, Marguerite Dahl of Lowell and Gertrude Sullivan of Lowell. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, her parents, Rev. Roy and Lily Brumbaugh, one brother, Lamoin Brumbaugh, and one niece, Linda Paquette. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, JANUARY 5, 2002 at 11 a.m. at the Sheets Funeral Home, 604 E. Commercial Ave. Lowell, IN, Pastor Ken Locke officiating. Burial of cremated remains will follow at Lowell Memorial Cemetery, Lowell, IN. Friends are invited to call on Saturday, January 5th, from 10 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home. LaVonne was a retired nurse, and a WWII Army Veteran. She was a member of Rangeline Presbyterian Church in Hebron, IN, and Crown Point Seniors and Beech Grove Seniors Bridge Clubs. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Rangeline Presbyterian Church.

Kevin D. Tucker, age 30, of Bessemer, MI, formerly of Griffith, IN, passed away Wednesday, December 26, 2001 in Bessemer, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born April 30, 1971 in Hammond, IN, son of Harry and Nancy Tucker. He attended Griffith High School and graduated with the class of 1989. In October, 1989 Kevin enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He served as a communications technician until his discharge in December 1993. On April 21, 1990 Kevin was united in marriage with the former Susan Zakula in Griffith, IN. He is survived by his wife, Susan Tucker of Bessemer and five children, Brittany, Benjamin, Melody, Miranda and Katie, all at home. Other survivors include his parents, Harry and Nancy Tucker, Lowell, IN, two sisters, LeeAnne (Joe) Markase, Highland,IN and Sheree (Tim) Skertich, AZ, two brothers, Larry (Debbie) and Shane (Kim) Tucker, IN and Mr. & Mrs. Jeff Zakula and family, (in-laws)

Funeral services were held Friday, December 28, 2001 at 7 p.m. at the Chappell-Frick-Zielinski Funeral Home in Bessemer. Spring burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Bessemer.

Kevin was a loving son, husband, father and brother. His family was the joy of his life. He had a kind and generous heart, always willing to help someone in need. His ever present smile will be missed. Donations may be made to Nancy Tucker, 1305 Southwood Drive, Lowell, IN 46356 on behalf of his surviving wife and children.

Steven A. Ward, age 41, of Miami, FL, formerly of Highland, passed away, Monday, December 31, 2001. Survivors; mother, Barbara Ward of Highland, two brothers, David Ward of Crown Point and Jeffery (Camille) Ward of Davie, FL and one sister, Diane (Tim) Philips of St. John, four nieces, Kristin Philips, Jocellyn and Brynn Ward, Shannon Ward, two nephews, Garrett and Justin Ward, uncle, Thomas Schneegas of Valparaiso and friend, Christopher Weingarth of Miami, FL. Preceded in death by father, Dock Ward and two brothers, Kenneth and Michael Ward.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, January 5, 2002 at 6 p.m. at the Fagen Miller Funeral Home, 2828 Highway Avenue, Highland with Rev. Mark Wilkens officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday, from 4 p.m. until time of service.

Mr. Ward was a graduate of Highland High School, class of 1978. He was employed as a remodeler and was an avid fisherman and sports enthusiast. Memorials to the family would be appreciated.
