What would be a better way to start the year, than with a 1980’s Alfa Romeo GTV6 3.0? This brings me to a special car. A car that was only available on the South African markets between the years of 1984 to 1986. Where only 200 of these automobiles were produced, and where it was dubbed “The Poor Man’s Ferrari”. As the years went by these GTV’s became rarer and rarer, and the immaculate ones fetched high numbers. Owning one was becoming more and more difficult. Only purists understood this car, and with the racing heritage behind it, it was thee and still is car to have.

About a year ago, I had the privilege of driving a GTV6 3.0, and it was everything the adverts and forum talk said it would be. Even though the one I drove was a bit neglected, it still gave the ride of a true road-going race car. Through the gears, she was quick, and the sound from those triple DeLortto carburetors made were so pure. The steering was pin point, turn in was precise, and the feedback from the wheel was almost certain. She had the go of a race horse, and the grunt of a Kitty Hawk. She put a huge grin on my face. This particular car was owned by the father of a very dear friend of mine. And never have I ever met a young man that is so enthusiastic about these Alfa Romeos.

I do apologize for the lack of content because I shot this car at a restaurant on my holiday in Cape Town, and the owner wasn’t there to comment, nevertheless, I will give you a brief history about why the Alfa Romeo GTV6 3.0 is so special.

So, back in the 80’s, during the era of SA Saloon car racing, the 3.0 liter GTV6 was built in order to keep the competition alive against the BMW 535i, and since the BMW’s straight 6 engine displaced 3.5 liters, the then GTV6 which displaced only 2.5 liters was deemed uncompetitive over the BMW. Alfa Romeo South Africa then approached Milan for a solution, and arrangements were made to up the displacement and keep the car on the racing circuit. Only 200 of these car were built for homologation. The GTV6 3.0 boasted increased bore and stroke, with larger valves, and different pistons, sleeves, crankshaft, and cylinder head castings. The earlier 2.5 liter GTV6 was fueled via a Bosch L-Jetronic injection system, and the now 3.0 GTV6 ran on a 6 caburettor setup.

Another way to spot a homologation GTV3.0 are from the bulgy bonnet, which was made up of fiberglass, for lightness. The reason for the larger bulge on the bonnet was to accommodate the carburetors and air filter. The front bumper was now lower, and also had ducts within them, which lowered the radiator temperature by 5 degrees centigrade. The wheels that she now sported were 3 piece Compomotive CX5’s. These were lighter, stronger, and cooled the brakes better. She also wore Pirelli P7 tires (205/50/R15) for a wider track. The suspension was slightly hunkered down, and stiffened.

The GTV6 was a very successful race car, and held the title high until Alfa Romeo left South Africa in 1985. Seeing this low-miler example with everything intact was quite a special feeling. And one will only understand once one drives a car like this. Like someone famous said, you’re not a true petrol-head until you’ve owned an Alfa Romeo. I now understand the meaning of that, and I have a best friend (Yasin Cage) that can vouch for that.
