Many historians of the automotive industry agree that one of the most important years in the heritage of automobiles in the United States was 1955. Among the many developments brought to market that year was the new line of cars from the Chrysler Corporation showing the first real influence of their new styling chief Virgil Exner. His unique "Forward Look" school of design was very well received by the post-war booming economy seen during the mid-1950s, and all lines in the Mopar family benefited from his team ’ s ability to transform sheet metal into rolling objects of contemporary art. Among the most attractive and best received line of cars was the one that carried the Chrysler name.

From the division that carried the founder's own name, all of the top-shelf models were placed in the New Yorker Deluxe series and among the most popular models was the Newport hardtops. Introduced several months into the season, the St. Regis hardtop was released, once again gaining praise from the motoring press for its design and eye-appeal.

Setting the St. Regis apart from the base New Yorker hardtop was the use of unique stainless side trim accompanied by exclusive two-tone paint schemes and interior appointments such as color-keyed two-tone steering wheels, full carpeting and upgraded fabrics and bolster materials. The result would add even more praise to Exner's ideas and execution of a theme, as well as catching the attention of the competition.

The 1955 Chrysler New Yorker Deluxe St. Regis hardtop presented here was purchased new by a lady owner in Texas, she used it sparingly on a regular basis, driving it only for short and necessary trips. According to family members they say the hardtop was always "babied". Kept out of harsh weather in a protective garage, the St. Regis was beautifully preserved with little effect of weather or the elements, which might have been seen with a lesser quality of storage. When the original owner passed away, the car was inherited by her son, with the odometer showing just a little over 43,000 miles from new.

In 1998, as a tribute to the preservation that had been given to the hardtop by his mother, he treated the car to a full cosmetic restoration at which time the body was inspected and found to be as solid at the day it was built. All the chrome was replated to original standards, and stainless trim polished back to like-new luster. Fitted with original style chrome wire wheels, it features power-assisted brakes and steering, clock, original radio, heater and even seat belts. In 2005, it was exhibited and judged at the Walter P. Chrysler Club's meet in Minneapolis, Minnesota where it walked away with the coveted Best of Show honors.

This is a car that invites you take a second look; check out the unique styling of the dashboard with the Powerflite gear selector's unique mounting on the dashboard, combined with the lavish use of chrome. Once you've seen the colorful soft-trim materials on the inside combined with the styling and color of the exterior, with its superb fit, finish and flash you will see why this car was part of the record sales in 1955.
