After a largely enjoyable drive in the Daihatsu Charade, I was left wondering what the Sirion would have in store for me when I went to n the launch of the 1,5-litre Sport. I hoped to be similarly impressed… and I was. For the most part, at least!

In general, I quite liked the look of this quirky vehicle. It’s might be small in stature, but it’s big in character. It’s headlights look at you as if it wants to pounce… but in that way that a cute kitten pounces when you’re fooling around with its ball of wool. The new fog lights only adds to the sporty look of this “supermini.”

At the launch, we each got about an hour to drive the Sirion. The first thing I noticed was the ease that came with steering this tiny vehicle. It didn’t need much encouragement to turn – a slight simple movement of the wheel was sufficient to get you in the direction in which you wanted to go. The handling is suitably sprightly, thanks to the smooth steering and the car’s compact dimensions – no 99-point turns are required to extricate yourself from a cramped parking bay. The only thing that marred an otherwise entertaining drive was a recalcitrant gear change. The gears were sometimes reluctant to engage, and even when I tried to force it into place, I could hear the gearbox struggling.

Generally, the drive was great. On the straight road, the 1,5-litre Sirion picks up speed quite easily, and can keep up the pace. Although the 76 kW powerplant is not exactly conducive to sprinting, it can reach 100 km/h from standstill in 10,5 seconds, and on to reach a speed of 185 km/h. This Sirion was did struggle a bit on steep inclines, however. Even when I literally put the pedal to the metal, the Sirion took some time to build up a head of stem on some of the uphill sections of the drive.

Although the interior colour scheme may not be to everyone’s taste, the overall ambience of the cabin was very neat. The instrument cluster, although a little busy, was easy to reach and easy on the eye as well. The boot space, although fairly compact, is a step up from the luggage space in the Charade. It may just be able to be big enough to play host to my holiday luggage.

All in all, it’s easy to like the Sirion. It’s a capable little car that offers great value for money and is comfortable too. It’s a compact vehicle that seems to appeal more to females, and if it weren’t for the fact that I have my heart set on the Mazda2 right now, I wouldn’t have any reservations about adding the Sirion to my wish list.
