Ferraris have always inflamed automotive passions, but the legendary 365 GTB “Daytona” introduced at the Paris Auto Salon in October 1968 did so like no other Ferrari before it. The Daytona’s silky-smooth dual overhead cam V-12 and classic styling were evolutionary rather than revolutionary and seemed conservative in the context of the mid-engine revolution that was then in full bloom. But the passing years have proven the beauty of the Daytona concept, which embodied Ferrari’s greatest strengths, conventional layout notwithstanding: a highly developed chassis and suspension, visionary Pininfarina styling and superb V-12 engine.

The Daytona’s chassis employed Ferrari’s traditional welded oval-section tube frame, all-independent coil-spring suspension and power-assisted vented four-wheel disc brakes. While it did not possess much in the way of technological advances, the Daytona’s 4.4L/352 HP powerplant was hardly mundane: aluminum block and heads, six Weber carburetors, dual ignition, four cams, billet steel crank and dry sump oiling—that list of features alone is enough to get the pulse going, but firing up the Daytona and unleashing its power will send the heartbeat rocketing skyward.

For all its technical and auditory charms, the Daytona’s biggest strength was—and remains—its captivating form. Pininfarina designer Leonardo Fioravanti conceived the classic shape while studying a bare 330 GTC chassis, but it was Sergio Pininfarina himself who finalized its timeless look with his knife-edged front-end treatment, which originally featured a clear Plexiglas band across the headlight area; this was subsequently replaced with a retractable headlamp arrangement to make the car legal for the North American market.

While some Ferrari enthusiasts and automotive journalists were initially ambivalent about the Daytona’s conventional nature, the first road tests produced universal praise. Autocar Magazine called the Daytona “an important new yardstick, standing at the pinnacle of the fast car market.” In a 1970 “Road & Track” test in which he took one to 173 MPH, Dean Batchelor noted, “the fastest—and best—GT is not necessarily the most exotic,” declaring that the Daytona was the “greatest all-around blend of speed, handling and refinement.”

One of 1,422 built from 1968 through 1973 (including 122 Spyders and 16 competition versions), this Ferrari Daytona coupe was produced in August 1972. It received a professional nut-and-bolt restoration in the 1990s and won the Ferrari Concours Platinum Award in 1998, and has been part of a private collection since 1999. At 48,760 miles the car retains its original 4.4L DOHC V-12 engine and 5-speed gearbox, and has been driven approximately 8,000 miles since the restoration. In addition to its rebuilt engine and drivetrain, the car boasts beautiful Yellow paint and a contrasting black leather interior, air conditioning, power windows and sharp Borrani chromed wire wheels with three-bar knock-off fasteners. Offered with a tool roll and owner’s manual, this is a superbly maintained example of one of Ferrari’s greatest road cars.
