Description: The 2011 Ford Escape Hybrid is ranked #22 in 2011 Affordable Compact SUVs by U.S. News & World Report. See the full review, specs, pictures and prices.

The 2011 Ford Escape Hybrid has one of the highest fuel economy ratings among 2011 compact SUVs, but it lacks the clever interior details that rivals offer and it has low safety scores.

When it was new, critics praised the Escape Hybrid for delivering excellent fuel economy while driving much like a gas-only SUV. They said the transition between electric and gasoline propulsion is very smooth, though some did note that the regenerative brakes feel a bit touchy. The interior drew mixed reviews, as some complimented the modern design and ample space, while others criticized the lackluster material quality and somewhat awkward driving position. The Escape Hybrid’s safety ratings are also low for the class.

The combined output of the Escape Hybrid’s gasoline engine and electric motor is 177 horsepower. While no critic called it fast, most said that the Escape Hybrid has enough power for most situations. It is also great on fuel, as expected from a hybrid. Front-wheel drive versions average 34/31 mpg city/highway, while adding all-wheel drive drops mileage to 30/27, which is still excellent for the class.

Critics mostly liked the Escape Hybrid’s interior, saying it has an upscale appearance and plenty of space throughout. Some criticism was leveled by one reviewer who had difficulty finding a comfortable driving position. Some also mentioned that it lacks clever details, like a sliding rear seat, that are found in some competitors. The Escape Hybrid can haul up to 66.4 cubic feet of cargo with the rear seats folded, which is pretty good for the class. Base models come standard with cloth seats, Ford’s SYNC infotainment system, Bluetooth, dual-zone climate control and satellite radio. Upgrading to the Limited trim adds leather seats with front heating, a power sunroof, rear parking assist and a backup camera. Also optional when it was new is Ford’s Active Park Assist, which parallel parks the vehicle with minimal driver input.

If you’re considering the Escape Hybrid, you should also take a look at the gas-only 2011 Ford Escape. While its fuel economy doesn’t match that of the Hybrid’s, four-cylinder variants still get decent mileage for the class and used gas-only models tend to be priced less than used hybrid versions. It also has the same spacious interior and generous cargo area, along with a higher towing capacity.

Another 2011 compact SUV you may like is the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox. While it’s not a hybrid, its four-cylinder fuel economy ratings are among the best in the class. It also has thoughtful features like a sliding second-row seat that can be adjusted to make room for more cargo or increased passenger space.
