Description: Auction Lot S147, Indianapolis, IN 2008.

The 1966 Ford Fairlane was a very successful car for Ford, which sold almost 76,000 Fairlane 500 hardtop coupes. For the first time, the Fairlane was engineered to accept Ford’s larger FE big-block engines. A fully optioned 427 Fairlane was a luxurious, fast and good-looking car that did well in its sales spot between the Galaxie and the Mustang.

Of course, those were the days of radical NASCAR and NHRA factory experimentals, when low-volume racers issued forth from both well-connected dealers and private skunkworks, in this case the famous Ford tuners and race prep wizards Holman-Moody. John Holman and Ralph Moody knew their Fords, and, having helped develop the company’s radical new 427 SOHC engine, they knew how to tune it to maximum effect. So when John R Fulp, Jr. of Anderson, SC wanted an all-conquering “sleeper” for his recreational pursuits, he turned to the pair to work their magic on his brand new 1966 Fairlane 500XL.

H&M began by stripping the car of its engine, driveline and suspension. They modified the spring towers and relocated the master cylinder to make room for the larger SOHC motor. The steering box, linkage, hubs, spindles and brakes were replaced with heavy duty NASCAR-spec parts. The rear end was swapped for a Ford nine-inch unit fitted with floating axles, and race-duty steel wheels mounted at all four corners. A beefed-up T-10 Top-Loader 4-speed was bolted to the 600hp dual-4-barrel 427 along with an engine oil cooler, and the entire unit shoehorned into the car. And with that, John R Fulp, Jr. of Anderson, SC had himself a brand new Holman-Moody-built Bigger Hammer.

Shortly after the present owner bought this unique machine, he brought it to Holman-Moody’s facilities, where he recorded a video documenting its features and history, with insightful commentary by Lee Holman and Howard Dehart. This video will accompany the car along with a custom sign that chronicles its unique story.

The only one of its kind, this incredible 427SOHC Fairlane is a fascinating demonstration of that old Holman-Moody magic.
