As a hatchback, the Ford Mondeo is a refined and comfortable car with a well designed and well equipped interior. To this list of attributes the Ford Mondeo estate adds arguably better looks and a roomy, well shaped boot. However, it's not quite as large as the boot of the Volkswagen Passat estate, one of this car's main rivals. What's worse, it's smaller than its predecessor's boot, too.
The Mondeo estate wasn’t launched that long ago, but the range has already grown with the addition of some engines. In addition to our favourite petrol engine (a 1.5-litre EcoBoost that produces 156bhp) there's now a 1.0-litre version producing 123bhp. It's slightly more efficient and tax-friendly than the 1.5-litre, but not by enough to justify its less impressive performance.
However, that's overshadowed to some extent by the range of powerful and economical diesels on offer. These include a 1.5-litre and a choice of three different 2.0-litre TDCi engines. One of the highlights among these is the 176bhp version. It can do 0-62mph in 8.4 seconds, yet can manage 62.8mpg economy and costs just £30 a year to tax.
Unlike the Mondeo saloon, there's no hybrid version of the Mondeo estate. Most are front-wheel drive, but there are two all-wheel-drive models, too – both powered by one of the 2.0-litre TDCi diesel engines mentioned above.
The new Mondeo estate isn’t quite the driver's car its predecessor was. Instead, it has been engineered for comfort, with lighter steering. Perhaps that's no bad thing considering this car is likely to spend most of its time on motorways. A Mazda6 Tourer is more fun to drive.
The Mondeo's cabin is very roomy and offers plenty of head and legroom front and rear. Its boot is smaller than the one in the VW Passat estate, but it's at least well shaped, with a large opening. In addition, the rear seats can be folded flush with the floor to give a clear load area that makes maximum use of the available space.
Interior quality is better than before, while all versions have an eight-inch colour touchscreen that's larger than the one in the Passat. It features the latest version of Ford's SYNC voice-recognition system, enabling it to understand spoken commands faster and easier.
There are three trim levels: Style, Zetec and Titanium. The last one can be enhanced with the X pack at a cost of £2,000. But even basic Style trim has alloy wheels, DAB digital radio, climate control and cruise control. It leaves little for Zetec trim to add other than a heated windscreen, all-round electric windows and body-coloured details.
The latest Ford Mondeo estate feels much better built than the old car. It now comes close to the VW Passat for fit and finish. It was awarded the maximum five-star safety rating by Euro NCAP and there's a wide range of optional safety equipment to choose from.
