As previously, the new Corsa will be available in distinct three and five-door body styles - the coupé-like silhouette of the three-door looks sportier, while the five-door's design expresses its virtues of more functional family car. The new Corsa's exterior is in compliance with Opel's design philosophy: flowing, sculptural artistry shapes are combined with precisely designed details, ensuring that it is immediately recognized as a member of the latest generation Opel vehicles. Inside, the Corsa continues to impress with customary extensive space for five people but also with new, sophisticated design and premium materials.

From the front, the Corsa is immediately recognizable as a member of the current Opel family. The bold face is characterized by the 'wing' shaped headlights incorporating Opel's signature 'wing' LED daytime running lights and the low sporty trapezoidal grille, with its dynamic chrome bar supporting the Opel emblem. The front fog lights are embedded in two low, outward laying but graphically connected air inlets with chrome trim and give the Corsa an even wider appearance.
The side view of the three and five-door bodies is very different due to the individual window graphics. In the three-door model, the upper window line drops to the rear much like for a coupé thus emphasizing its sporty appearance. In the five-door variant, the belt line extends upwards to create a dynamic connection with the roof spoiler. The sculptured body sides feature Opel's typical dynamic 'blade' body side signature.
The rear view of the fifth generation Corsa is also completely new. At the rear end, the wide horizontal split tail lights help to visually widen the car and flow through to the rear shoulders, giving it an even better stance. The well-known 'wing' graphic design shines when the rear lights are switched on. The lower bumper is visually connected to the body side 'blade' through design lines that flow into the license plate pocket.

IntelliLink has a standard seven-inch color touchscreen and its home page gives access to five major functions: make phone calls (Phone), listen to music (Audio), looks at photos and videos (Gallery), change settings such as the language of the system for instance (Settings) or use apps (Apps). BringGo is IntelliLink's navigation app. It can be downloaded from the app store as a map version for Eastern and Western Europe. Once downloaded, the map data remains installed on the user's smartphone, which means Corsa owners do not need a smartphone broadband connection to use the BringGo navigation system. BringGo solely uses the smartphone's GPS to locate the Corsa. The Stitcher app is a useful global podcast internet radio service which lets users listen to programs live, or after they have been broadcast. Once Stitcher is downloaded to a smartphone, Corsa owners can access more than 10,000 podcasts on demand, including radio shows and live stations around the world, via the Corsa's IntelliLink touchscreen. With access to a global network of 70,000 radio stations, the TuneIn app has the power to offer entertainment to suit the tastes of every listener. There are there levels of infotainment equipment for the new Opel Corsa: The R 3.0 Radio, the CD 3.0 BT system, with radio and a MP3/WMA compatible CD player featuring Bluetooth and USB connections and the state-of the-art IntelliLink infotainment system.
The new Corsa not only offers a new driving experience with improved comfort and precision thanks to its new chassis and steering systems, it also makes driving easier and safer with advanced assistance systems. Particularly in hectic city driving conditions, they help the driver in a variety of ways. At the touch of a button, the standard City mode increases power assistance at lower speeds, which is particularly useful when maneuvering in congested urban areas. Hill Start Assist also comes as standard. It maintains the brake function for about two seconds after the driver has taken his/her foot off the brake pedal. This prevents the Corsa from rolling back when starting on a slope or, for instance, when driving off from traffic lights or an uphill parking spot.
Many of the new Corsa's driver assistance systems are unrivalled in its vehicle class. These include bi-xenon headlamps with cornering light and LED daytime running lights. This impressive system that so far was only available in vehicles of superior classes offers improved range, brightness and color intensity - a decisive plus for visibility and safety. In addition, it has a lower power consumption, and a much longer service life.
The new generation Advanced Park Assist identifies suitable parking spaces and automatically parks the vehicle, without the driver touching the wheel. The ultrasonic sensor-based system measures parallel or perpendicular parking spots, calculates the vehicle's trajectory and automatically steers the Corsa into a space. The driver just controls acceleration, deceleration and gear shifting. Advanced Park Assist always comes with Side Blind Spot Alert, which also uses the ultrasonic sensors to warn the driver of an imminent collision when changing lanes. The sensors have a range of three meters to the left and right of the car, enabling them to detect objects or other vehicles in the driver's blind spot. Whenever another vehicle comes within range of the sensors, a warning LED illuminates in the relevant exterior door mirror. The optional combined pack, comprising the up-level functionalities of Park Assist and Side Blind Spot Alert, is offered for 580 euros.
A speed limiter function also allows the driver to select a maximum vehicle speed above 30 km/h at the touch of a steering wheel control button. This feature is particularly useful in town or city driving, for instance to prevent a 30 km/h speed limit being inadvertently exceeded.
Extras such as the optional Rearview Camera (295 euros) can also be integrated, while safety is further increased thanks to new systems - such as the second-generation Opel Eye front camera system with Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane Departure Warning, High Beam Assist, Following Distance Indication and Forward Collision Warning. Lane Departure Warning alerts drivers with an acoustic and visual warning when they unintentionally stray out of their lane. Traffic Sign Recognition reads speed limit, no-passing and supplementary road signs. To provide maximum safety, Forward Collision Warning uses an acoustic alert and a red, head-up warning that is projected into the windshield whenever the distance to the preceding vehicle falls below the pre-set minimum distance. Following Distance Indication (FDI) provides the driver with the distance to other vehicles in front in seconds. High Beam Assistant automatically activates the High Beam Light for better road illumination and improved visibility. The system monitors the distance to a preceding vehicle or oncoming traffic, recognizes the headlamps or tail lights of other vehicles and automatically switches the headlamps to low beam to prevent blinding other road users. This results in higher comfort and safety for drivers and passengers.
Electronic Stability Control (ESC), fitted as standard, guarantees high driving stability during evasive maneuvers or on slippery road surfaces. As soon as the Corsa threatens to break away, the system engages with targeted brake and engine intervention.
The Corsa features three airbag systems as standard: front airbags for driver and passenger, side airbags and head curtain side airbags in front and rear.
Opel is in the middle of the most massive powertrain offensive in its history: since spring 2013, it has launched three new generation engine families - and it will continue, as 17 new engines will be introduced by 2018. After the new generation midsize gasoline and diesel power units, now comes the small gasoline 3 cylinder, 1.0 liter ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo. Freshly launched in the ADAM family, it also is the highlight in the new generation Corsa. It offers outstandingly sophisticated driving refinement and responsiveness together with frugal fuel consumption - proving that high driving comfort and pleasure can be combined with excellent efficiency. Another addition to the gasoline powertrain line-up is a 1.4-liter Turbo generating remarkable peak torque of 200 Nm. On the diesel side, the new generation Corsa is available with two 1.3 CDTI engines offering 55 kW/75 hp and 70 kW/95 hp. Both have been profoundly reworked to provide more refinement and responsiveness while remaining outstandingly efficient - as proves a fuel consumptions as low as 3.2 liter/100 km in the combined cycle.
The new Corsa also comes with many transmission novelties. The new 1.0 Turbo gasoline engine is combined with an all-new, compact six-speed manual gearbox featuring minimized internal friction for a better efficiency and excellent shift comfort. Two further transmission novelties round off the range. A new six-speed, torque converter-based automatic transmission brings driving luxury previously reserved for higher vehicle classes to the small car segment. In addition, the new Corsa can be equipped with a new generation automated, five-speed manual transmission Easytronic 3.0 for which shifting smoothness has been substantially improved. Easytronic 3.0 provides automated operation at a more affordable price as well as excellent fuel efficiency and smooth gear shifting.
The new generation three-cylinder engine that powers the new Corsa has been developed from a white sheet of paper. It is the first of a new family of small gasoline three and four-cylinder units that will be progressively introduced in the Opel range. A three-cylinder architecture has been selected to reach new levels of fuel efficiency for gasoline-powered cars. As some customers hesitate to opt for a three cylinder engines due to their rather high level of noise and vibrations, the 200 engineers who developed Opel's new generation unit in Rüsselsheim over the last three and a half years put comfort at the top of their development priority list. As a result, Opel's three cylinder is the most silent and the quietest three-cylinder unit on the market place. Numerous sound engineering measures contribute to the engine's benchmark refinement, as 40 components and sub-groups have been acoustically-optimized from the beginning of the development - such as the cylinder block as well as the structurally isolated fuel injection system and crankshaft. In addition, a sump-mounted counter-rotating balance shaft further reduces noise and vibrations. This is a universally unique feature for a 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine.
Second development priority of the new-generation 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine was to deliver excellent responsiveness - so, not only the quietness, but also the pleasure provided should surprise customers. Both versions with 66 kW/90 hp and 85 kW/115 hp excel in delivering strong low-end torque with extreme efficiency, pumping out 170 Nm from just 1,800 rpm. This is particularly evident during acceleration from 80 to 120 km/h, a decisive speed range for overtaking, when this compact powerhouse belies its size by delivering strong power from low rpm. Propelled by the 115 hp version, the Corsa makes this transition in just 10.4 seconds.
Start/Stop technology is fitted as standard with both versions of the 1.0 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo. This helps them to boast excellent fuel economy: the 90 hp, three-door Corsa consumes just 4.3 l/100 km over the combined cycle, equating to only 100 g/km CO2 emissions.
State-of-the-art technologies in Opel's new generation three-cylinder engine include high-pressure direct fuel injection, an ultra-compact turbocharging system and continuously variable valve timing (intake and exhaust sides). Lightweight, all-aluminum construction, with a cylinder head-integrated exhaust manifold, contributes to low weight: the 1.0 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo tips the scales at just 106 kg. The engine is mated to an all-new, compact six-speed manual gearbox. Highlights include greater efficiency, thanks to low friction design and a precise shift feel.
In addition to both three-cylinder newcomers, the new Corsa's gasoline powertrain line-up also includes 1.2 and 1.4-liter four-cylinder units. New to the range is the 74 kW/100 hp 1.4-liter turbo, delivering 200 Nm maximum torque over a wide plateau from 1,850 to 3,500 rpm. It is strong pulling power that establishes this engine that is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, as the torque hero of the new Corsa powertrain portfolio. The entry-level Corsa engine is a 1.2-liter, naturally-aspirated unit with 51 kW/70 hp. It is followed by a 66 kW/90 hp, 1.4-liter gasoline engine which can be mated to three different transmissions - manual, full automatic or the automated Easytronic 3.0.
The 1.3-liter diesel engine in the new generation Corsa has been profoundly reworked in its hard- and software in order to deliver smoother power and sound and to comply with the stringent Euro 6 emissions standard. The 1.3 CDTI can be ordered in two output versions, 55 kW/75 hp or 70 kW/95 hp, both giving 190 Nm maximum torque. New-generation turbochargers ensure smooth driving and acceleration at low engine speeds with minimal noise generation. Both versions come with fuel-saving Start/Stop technology fitted as standard and a five-speed manual gearbox - six-speed will also be available soon in combination with higher output. At launch, the most frugal Corsa diesel version - a three-door model with 70 kW/95 hp, a five-speed manual transmission and braking energy recuperation system - can reduce CO2 emissions down to 85 g/km and fuel consumption to 3.2 l/100 km in the combined cycle. This has earned it Germany's A+ energy efficiency label (according to Regulation [EC] No 715/2007).
Opel's new generation six-speed manual gearbox developed under the code M1X is mated standard with the new generation three cylinder engine. It is distinguished by its improved efficiency and outstanding shift quality. Opel engineers have achieved greater operating efficiency through optimally stepped gear ratios and low friction design for internal components. Weighing less than 40 kg, this is one of the lightest manual gearboxes on the market.
For the first time in the small car class, Opel offers a six-speed automatic transmission. The increased number of ratios (the Corsa of the previous generation had a four-speed automatic transmission) enable a wider spread of gears. The long sixth gear, for example, ensures a low engine speed during autobahn driving, less engine friction and a pleasantly low noise level in the cabin. Initially this transmission, featuring fast and extremely smooth gear shifting, is available exclusively with the 66 kW/90 hp 1.4-liter gasoline engine. Opel engineers designed the automatic gearbox with torque converter so that it is oil filled for life.
With the new Corsa, Opel introduces its third-generation automated five-speed manual transmission. It will appeal especially to price-sensitive customers who do not want to forgo the comfort offered by an automatic transmission. Easytronic 3.0 is a technical quantum leap which catapults shifting and drive-off responses to a level near that of conventional, converter-based automatic transmissions - but for about half the price and with improved fuel economy. Technical optimization has been achieved through advancements in the areas of actuators, sensor technology and control engineering, as well as the incorporation of a completely re-worked base manual gearbox. There are also new functions in the interaction between the powertrain's control modules. In addition to automatic mode with an electro-hydraulic actuator taking over shifting and clutching operations, Easytronic 3.0 also offers manual gear shifting via push and pull operation of the gearshift.
Compared to conventional automatic transmissions, Easytronic 3.0 has a lower weight and minimal interior friction. It opens the door to excellent fuel efficiency as it can reduce the 66 kW/90 hp Corsa 1.4 ecoFLEX's fuel consumption down to just 4.7 l/100 km over the combined cycle with 110 g/km CO2 emissions.
Chassis engineers in charge of developing the fifth generation Opel Corsa have set to themselves the objective of delighting future customers with a driving experience comparable to the one provided by larger, more expensive cars in terms of comfort and precision. They have lowered the center of gravity of the new Corsa by 5 millimeters and completely redesigned its chassis and steering systems.
"The chassis of the new generation Corsa does not inherit a single component from the previous model. We turned every conceivable setscrew to achieve a better drive experience with new levels of comfort, precision and pleasure. At the same time, we concentrated on finding the optimal balance between enjoyable dynamics and predictable, safest road-handling," said Michael Ableson, Vice-President Vehicle Engineering Europe.
In addition to its 5 millimeter lower center of gravity, the Corsa receives a new, stiffer, redesigned chassis. The front MacPherson suspension has a new geometry with new front knuckles which improve the vehicle's roll behavior, steering response and understeer behavior. A new, reinforced sub-frame increases torsional rigidity, while dual strut mounts provide improved responsiveness on uneven surfaces. Furthermore, the new spring rates and damper characteristics in the front reduce the pitching moment during sharp braking maneuvers. This results in the Corsa remaining controllable in case of emergency braking, even for inexperienced drivers. The rear axle torsion bar has been redesigned too, and an enhanced stabilizer has been added to reduce tilting for a better cornering compliance and stability.
Corsa customers can choose between two chassis set-ups, the standard 'Comfort' and the more active and direct 'Sport'. The Comfort chassis is featured with 14 to 16 inch wheels. The Sport chassis has stiffer springs and shock absorbers as well as a specific steering geometry and calibration for a more direct response. It is optional with 16-inch wheels and comes standard on Corsa models equipped with 17-inch wheels.
In order to improve directional stability, the Opel engineers changed the mounting points of the rack-and-pinion steering shaft and optimized its geometry. A newly constructed mounting for the steering column saves space which is filled with additional padding material and increases driver safety in case of a collision. Furthermore, the steering column possesses special impact absorbers.
The development of a completely new electrical architecture for the fifth generation Corsa enables a more sophisticated level of interaction between its various systems. An optimized software for the electrical and speed-dependent power steering adds additional possibilities. For instance, all new Corsa are equipped with a new standard 'City' steering mode that allows reducing steering effort at low speeds for easing maneuvers. The City mode is activated at the press of a button located on the center console.
Furthermore, the active cornering component of the Corsa's steering aids the driver in crosswinds and on convex roads. Amongst others, the software is fed with the data from the ninth generation Electronic Stability Program (ESPPlus). This system contains no less than eleven different functions, including, for example, the new Hill Start Assist.
Elsewhere, the fifth generation of the Opel bestseller can be fitted with an Advanced Parking Assistant (€580 including VAT). This system recognizes parallel and perpendicular parking spaces and takes over the steering, meaning that the driver only has to control the pedals.
The base new Corsa comes with 14-inch steel rims and 185/70 tires. In combination with a turbocharged engine (1.0 turbo, 1.4 turbo and 1.3 CDTI), the new Corsa is always fitted with 15-inch or bigger wheels. However, the Opel bestseller can optionally be ordered with 17-inch rims and 215-wide tires. The standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System display warns the driver in the event of excessive pressure loss in one of the tires.
The braking system consists of ventilated front and solid rear discs which can easily cope with high stress. The pedal feel is distinguished by the exactly defined pressure point and excellent controllability. The braking systems is assisted by electronic aids that permanently receive information for the ABS/ESP sensors. For example, the systems recognizes if the braking maneuver is being performed while cornering and distributes the braking force to all four wheels depending on the load.
The engineers in Opel's Test Center in Dudenhofen have tested the new generation Corsa extensively over thousands of kilometers before allowing it to be presented to the customers. The Opel Development Team pushed the new Corsa to its limits during the tests: the development prototypes had to master 40,000 kilometers on the torture track, the high speed circuit and in hilly terrain, equivalent to 160,000 kilometer on "normal" demanding roads. Within only 24 weeks, these development prototypes are put through burdens that a production car would normally only encounter during its entire life cycle.
The new Corsa was asked to prove its resilience time and time again on the torture track. The track delivers exactly what its name promises: more than 900 meters of potholes, humps, the "washboard", a cobbled section and a pavé track. It's a really tough test for the chassis, which will most probably never go through such torture in real life - but the Corsa mastered it comfortably. To put the steering, transmission and brakes to the test, the new Corsa also successfully completed the hill track many thousand times.
On Dudenhofen's 40-degree banking circuit without lateral forces engineers can test the stability at high speed. Another circuit that is used during the testing procedure has rising and falling gradients, ranging from eight to 30 percent, with different road surfaces and a serpentine section including hairpin turns - similar to conditions found in alpine mountains.
The endurance test, which all new Opel models are put through, was decisive for the new generation Corsa. The longest track at the test center offers many different road surfaces including asphalt and cobblestones, bumps and numerous curves. Here engineers test if the performance and quality they fine-tuned and approved in the development vehicles have been successfully transferred to the production vehicles. This final quality control ensures that any minute disturbances or doubts are erased, thus guaranteeing that the new Corsa reaches the customers perfectly aligned with the stringent performance and quality targets set at the beginning of its development.

In its major markets, the United Kingdom and Germany, it is even ranked second after the first six months of 2014 - in Germany with 13 per cent market share, very close to its main rival. The new Corsa generation wants to build on and eclipse this success. The popularity of the Corsa is not only reflected by the total sales but also by the amount of prizes it has won, including national "Car of the Year" awards in various countries. Immediately after its introduction in 1982, the Corsa A won the "Golden Steering Wheel" in Germany, and the latest generation, the Corsa D, was elected AUTOBEST when it was launched in 2006.
For 32 years, the Corsa has been offering an ever-changing, wide-spanning portfolio of different variants that Opel has been optimizing by adding new models, modern technology and individual configurations. During its development, the new Corsa was subjected to strict quality control in all areas. In addition to the regular validation program, 80 cars from the earliest pre-production phase accumulated hundreds of thousands of test kilometers as quickly as possible in order to receive additional important information - just one piece of the jigsaw that will increase the quality and reliability in the future serial model.
The fifth generation Corsa will start running off the production lines in the Opel plants in Eisenach and Zaragoza from the end of 2014. A three-door, gasoline engine Corsa E can be ordered for a very attractive entry-level price of €11,980 in Germany. Efficient driving pleasure with the diesel engine is available from €14,930. A five-door Corsa will only cost an additional €750 (RRP including VAT in Germany).
