Lot S176 // Kissimmee 2009 // Jan 22-24 LOG IN TO VIEW RESULTS 1962 Plymouth Savoy Max Wedge 2-Door Sedan

Part of the 1962 Chrysler B-body’s universal appeal to period racers is that its somewhat stodgy styling hid a technologically advanced drivetrain that made it capable of trailering everything it met. In other words, the B-Body 413 Max Wedge was the perfect sleeper: even after everyone woke up to it, it was still unbeatable. In his 2004 book Tales from The Drag Strip, Don Garlits describes driving a 413 Max Wedge with his wife Pat on the highway to Texas in 1962: “With a 3.31 gear, [we’re] leaving rubber at 120 mph and we just drove away from that Ford! I bet that guy talks about that to this day to his grandchildren!”

The Max Wedge began life in 1959 when Chrysler engineers added deck height to the 383 B-Block to stroke it out to 413 cubic inches, resulting in the “Raised B-Block” or “RB-Block.” The new engine had a bore/stroke ratio of 4.19 x 3.75 inches, twin Carter four-barrels on a cross-ram intake, a solid lifter cam, dual valve springs to handle 6000-plus rpm, magnafluxed rods and, of course, wedge-shaped combustion chambers. The 11.0:1-compression Max Wedge made 410 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, while the 13.5:1 version was rated at 420 horses and 470 lb-ft of torque. There was nothing else like it.

Offered throughout the corporate line of B-Bodies, the Max Wedge engine was part of a package designated by Dodge as the “Ramcharger 413” and by Plymouth as the “Super Stock 413”; this midsized 1962 Plymouth Belvedere Max Wedge is one of those so designated. The 17th of 23 such examples, it has been expertly restored using all original parts (including nuts and bolts) and is widely recognized as exemplary of the type.

As plain a wrapper as one could find in Detroit that year, this Silhouette Black example is nonetheless beautifully finished. Carefully fitted and as straight as the day it left the factory, it rewards close inspection. Chrome and brightwork are in excellent condition. The original interior telegraphs the car’s intended mission- the standard instrumentation, radio delete, black plastic 2-spoke steering wheel, grey cloth and vinyl bench seat and black carpeting are all business. The three-speed floor mounted shifter is correct and retains the original “turtle shell” boot cover.

The engine compartment has been given the highest rating for its originality and authenticity, thanks to the original unsilenced air cleaner, cast iron “Ram’s Horn” exhaust manifolds and correct detailing.

Down below, the undercarriage is properly finished and as original, showcasing the heavy-duty suspension, massive drum brakes and 8 ¾ rear end that helped make the car such a durable workhorse. The few concessions to drivability include an added front sway bar, dual exhaust and 15-inch wheels and tires.

This marvelously restored, classic Mopar factory Super Stocker is accompanied by a 2006 Govier Inspection Report.

- Completely restored using most original parts including interior, air cleaners down to original bolts
