Pontiac's 1935 models featured a "turret top" body with an all-steel roof panel that eliminated the fabric insert in the center of the roof. It was a major bragging point for Pontiac that year despite the fact that the rest of the body kept the wood-framed construction GM had used for years. Pontiac's 1935 models featured a "turret top" body with an all-steel roof panel that eliminated the fabric insert in the center of the roof. It was a major bragging point for Pontiac that year despite the fact that the rest of the body kept the wood-framed construction GM had used for years. In an effort to capture more medium-price car buyers, Pontiac increased its model coverage by adding DeLuxe models with either an inline six- or inline eight-cylinder under the hood. Silver streaks flowed down the hood and over the center of the grille like an Art Deco waterfall, and became a Pontiac trademark. The grille was painted body color the next year to highlight the streaks, and the car's side louvers were simplified to reinforce this theme.

The 1937 DeLuxe models benefited from Pontiac's switch from Chevrolet's A-body to the B-body used by Oldsmobile, Buick and La Salle. This brought a five-inch increase in the wheelbase, and a switch to all-steel construction. The inline eight was enlarged to 249 cubic inches, and horsepower rose from 87 to 100. By contrast, the 187-in. six had less than 60 horsepower, and Pontiac, like most of the other automakers, raised prices to increase their razor-thin profits. It was the best sales year in Pontiac history to that point.

The recession of 1938 sent sales tumbling, and the DeLuxe name was given the year off, Pontiac offered a windshield washer as an option for the first time, and Pontiac became the first automaker to offer a column-mounted gearshift. For 1939, the B-body Six and Eight reclaimed the DeLuxe prefix, while the Quality Six was built on Chevy's A-body. Dealer dissatisfaction with the names caused a mid-year change that had the Quality Six rechristened the DeLuxe 115 Six and the DeLuxe Six renamed the DeLuxe 120 Six. The DeLuxe Eight name didn't change, and the numbers of the lesser models referred to their wheelbase length in inches.

In 1940, Pontiac added bolder front end styling, the DeLuxe 115 Six became the Special Six, and the Torpedo Eight sat at the top of the lineup on the C-body's 122-in. wheelbase. Horsepower for the six increased to 87, while the eight topped 103. The confusion caused by the different model designations caused Pontiac to reduce its series to three and make all of them Torpedoes. The DeLuxe version was based on the revamped A-body, the Streamliner on the B-body, and the Custom on the C-body. All had longer wheelbases that year. In 1942, the model designations were changed yet again to the Torpedo Six and Eight and Streamliner Six and Eight. The C-body Custom was dropped entirely
