Now these automatic gearboxes are very problematic, but first of all let me tell you that to know the exact code you need to check the car using a "Renault Clip" scan tool. Using snap on will get you nowhere.

Now these automatic gearboxes, usually have the same symptoms when having a faulty "pressure regulator solenoid".

But before doing that, i suggest you have the transmission scanned for codes, using the renault scan tool

As other scan tools will only give random numbers (as they are incompatible) and will give you more to think about, as opposed to a fix.

Now when the fault is detected by control module, it will switch the transmission to a fail safe mode (limp home mode) and trigger the transmission light, that is why your vehicle is switching to third gear.

Fail safe mode is used, when errors are detected by control module to prevent further damage to the system (gearbox)

I know it is going into safe mode, but fault is so intermittant. Surely if pressure regulator solenoid is faulty then fault would appear more consistently. So far everything you have said is what my local enginer has been telling me. Apart from Renault having non standard fault codes

Only these gearboxes aren't, and i've seen it many times, intermittent and still was the pressure regulator solenoid

Now i'm not confirming that it is the case in your car, i'm telling you what i know about these dreadful gearboxes, and at the same time, i'm showing you how to get it fixed.

As the first thing you need to do, is get it scanned by a renault clip, to know the exact fault code, to get you started, while having the culprit pinpointed.

it could be the wiring, the TCM (transmission control module), or any solenoid, even the control valve.

I fixed one, where it was the lock up clutch solenoid, but 90% of the time it is the pressure regulating solenoid, but you need t confirm that.

Are you saying that the Renault clip will diagnose the exact area or will this just give another selection of possible parts to replace. This could be a very expensive fault finding exercise.

It is expensive, it also is the only way. The renault scan tool should give a precise code, that has a specific fix (now it could be pressure solenoid, where you need to check the solenoid wiring, output at TCM and solenoid itself)
